How To Prepare Your Life for 2021
Goodbye, 2020. We are not gonna miss you. Let’s move on and let’s talk about some of the activities that you can do to create a fresh start for 2021. These are the kinds of activities that will make you feel inspired, refreshed, and renewed for the new year. Don’t waste our time and let’s dive into it right away.
Step number one: Digital Declutter
Step one of your new year’s reset is a digital declutter. Your devices are these amazing tools it can enable you to do so many things you can use them to start a business, to create a social media presence, to journal every day, to stay organized, and to meditate but instead, we end up using them to watch TikTok for three hours, envy scroll through Instagram and read other people’s strongly-worded Facebook grants in the local Facebook community groups. Take some time before the new year or after the new year begins to reset your digital spaces so that they are designed to make your life better.
Decluttering your space is just as impactful as decluttering your physical space if you use your computer, your mac, your iPad, your tablet, your phone a lot. Clear out declutter the apps you don’t use, the apps that don’t enhance your life, the files you don’t need, and add the apps that will make you more productive.
Organize things so that you’ll be happier so that the things that you use are easier to access, Unfollow people that make you envious, annoyed, or that are no longer aligned with your life, or delete social media altogether for a January reset.
Step number two: Space Declutter
Step number two is to declutter and organize the space that surrounds you like Marie Kondo’s style. With the guidance of Marie Kondo, you need to take everything out of its place so that you can see it in a new light. This just makes it more likely that you’ll declutter more thoroughly and you won’t skip over things just because you’re visually used to them.
Pick things one by one. That way you’re considering everything individually. Don’t over declutter if it has a functional purpose but you don’t like how it looks. Don’t get rid of it, unless you can replace it. After you declutter set tome limits around what you buy and bring into your space. This is a big one: There’s no point in decluttering without setting something like this up. Otherwise, it’ll go straight back to the way it was.
When it comes to organization I like to apply these principles: make everything easy to see and easy to find. Store things vertically. Marie Kondo changed my life with this advice and my draws are nearly always organized thanks to her. Create homes for everything. This is literally the key to an organized home. Don’t exaggerate at Sheldon Cooper’s level either, of putting labels on labels. But, even if you don’t declutter you can keep your space clear and organized by embedding this principle.
Step number three: Deep Clean
The end of the year is a perfect time for a deep clean. Get into the nooks, and crannies, and the corners that you might not usually clean. Wipe down the surfaces that you don’t usually get wiped down. Do a real clean out of your dishwasher and washing machine, and clean inside of storage spaces that maybe don’t usually get looked at.
Step four: An End of Year Life Admin Day
You don’t want to go into the new year dwelling on the old annoying and small to-do’s. Set aside a day before the end of the year to move through the life admin that you’ve been procrastinating. Book any appointments that you’ve been avoiding making, getting the eye check, the skin check, or doing the orthodontist consultation. Sign up for the insurance and finally put all of your passwords in a password manager.
When it comes to prioritizing what you do in your life happen days, I personally like to prioritize the things that are low effort but high impact. I also think there’s space to tick off the low effort and low impact items that maybe are not as important and long-term impactful but if they go unchecked for too long will continuously annoy you.
Step number five: Reflect, Plan, and Take Action
Reflect, plan, and take action for quarter one of 2021. There are three things that I consider very important to do towards the end of the year and the start of the new year. Firstly reflect on how your last year went (I know, I know… it’s been a rough year because of Coronavirus, but let's take it on an ourself-level) what did you learn, what mistakes did you make and what do you want to do differently. As I said, this year has been a particularly difficult one on a global scale, you might have learned a lot about yourself and what you want out of life, and what you want to keep in your life, then start planning.
I like to brainstorm on what goals are going to have the most impact on me in the new year by asking myself questions like: what are you struggling with, and what could you do to make that struggle less difficult for you. What traits do you want to embody this year? and how could you embody them? How do you want to feel and what could you do to make yourself feel that way.
And that’s it, guys. I wish all of you a Happy Holidays. Please be careful and take every precaution during these days. I hope to see you all next year and continue this amazing journey.
